Weaving Fun Into Tradition

Weaving Fun Into Tradition

Some traditions don’t need changing—they just need a place to shine. That’s the spirit behind the Sweetgrass Festival, coming back to Mount Pleasant on July 26.

This isn’t just any festival—it’s a celebration of Gullah Geechee culture and the deep-rooted tradition of sweetgrass basket weaving. From the steady hands of basket makers to the stories, songs, and food passed down through generations, it’s a living, breathing tribute to a culture that has shaped the Lowcountry in quiet, powerful ways.

The celebration starts at 10 a.m. in Memorial Waterfront Park and lasts until 3 p.m. Expect to see some of the region’s most talented weavers in action, creating intricate baskets by hand and sharing stories passed down through generations. Their booths—alongside local artisans, crafters, and vendors—turn the park into an open-air gallery of Lowcountry heritage. From jewelry and paintings to handmade goods inspired by Gullah tradition, there’s plenty to explore (and take home).

Of course, the baskets are just the beginning. The festival also brings music, dancing, and some of the best food you’ll eat all summer. If you’re the type who believes your plate should come with a side of history, grab a seat at the “Taste of Sweetgrass Culture” dinner the night before. Held in the Cooper River Room, it’s the kind of meal that sticks with you, in the best way—think okra, seafood, and rice dishes with stories behind them.

And yes, parking’s tight (thanks, construction), but the shuttles from Town Hall and the soccer complex make it easy. Just hop on, ride a few minutes, and you’re dropped off right at the action. No stress, no circling for a spot, just more time to soak it all in.

What makes this festival special is how effortlessly it blends history with celebration. You can show up for the food and fun, but you’ll leave with something else—maybe a deeper appreciation for the land, the people, and the traditions that continue to shape everyday life around here. It’s not flashy, and that’s kind of the point. It’s real, it’s rooted, and it’s always worth showing up for.
