Three Days of Grits and Glory!

Three Days of Grits and Glory!

Every April, St. George leans all the way into what it does best: turning a humble bowl of grits into a full-blown celebration. The World Grits Festival returns April 10-12 at 110 South Parler Avenue, and if you’ve never been, consider this your sign to fix that. Since 1986, this shindig has served as St. George’s moment to shine, complete with music, the smell of butter, and good, old-fashioned Southern fun.

Come for the Grits, Stay for the Chaos

At the heart of it all is the kind of fun that refuses to take itself too seriously. Yes, there are plenty of ways to eat grits, from classic Lowcountry bowls to creative spins piled high with shrimp, cheese, or whatever someone dreamed up that morning. But the real draw is everything happening around those plates.

A few can’t-miss moments:

  • Rollin’ in the Grits brings competitors face-first into a pool of the South’s favorite staple, chasing hidden objects while the crowd cheers them on.
  • The parade rolls through town with floats, local groups, and enough personality to keep you smiling curbside.
  • Live music stages keep things moving all day with everything from beachy tunes to Southern rock.
  • Arts and crafts vendors line the streets with handmade goods that feel right at home in a festival like this.
  • Food stalls go well beyond grits, though skipping them here would be missing the point.

What makes it work is the balance. There’s always something happening, but it never feels overwhelming. You can wander, stop when something catches your attention, and keep it moving when it doesn’t.

By the time the sun starts to dip, the festival settles into that easy Lowcountry rhythm. Kids are still running around, someone is dancing near a stage, and another round of food is probably already in hand. It is the kind of place where you lose track of time in the best way.

St. George may be small, but this weekend proves that it knows how to throw a party with personality. If your April calendar has an opening, this event is worth circling on your calendar!
