Theatre Without Borders, Rooted in Community

Theatre Without Borders, Rooted in Community

If you’ve ever driven past a park, a historic house, or a college campus in Lancaster County and spotted people hauling costumes and flats like it’s perfectly normal, you’ve probably crossed paths with the Community Playhouse of Lancaster County. Since 1972, CPLC has been proving that great theatre doesn’t need a permanent address to feel like home.

As Lancaster County’s oldest arts organization, CPLC proudly operates as a nomadic theatre. Instead of waiting for audiences to come to them, they bring shows to every corner of the county. One season might land in a historic space, while another finds a home in a campus theatre. Turns out, great theatre travels well!

Behind the scenes, everything runs on volunteer power. Directors, actors, designers, and crew members donate their time and talent, forming a tight-knit group that feels more like a family than a roster. CPLC also makes a point of being a safe, welcoming space for all ages and backgrounds, providing opportunities for young performers to explore their creativity and confidence without pressure.

This sense of purpose carries beyond Lancaster County. CPLC is a member of AACT, SETC, and the South Carolina Theatre Association, and in 2023, they won the SCTA state competition before representing South Carolina at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Louisville. This win came from the same rehearsal habits, collaborative directing style, and attention to detail that shape every local production.

Catch the following CPLC productions this spring:

  • Freaky Friday the Musical | February 25–March 1: A family-friendly musical putting a fresh spin on the classic body-swap story.
  • A Season to Die For | March 7: A Bridgerton-inspired Murder Mystery Dinner fundraiser complete with a full meal from local caterers and a cash bar for a night of drama, laughs, and mystery.
  • Always a Bridesmaid | May: A Southern comedy about four lifelong friends navigating life, plus a special Saturday matinee featuring an intimate wedding fair with local vendors.

Stay tuned for their upcoming season announcement; there’s plenty more storytelling ahead!

Whether they’re competing regionally or performing just down the road, CPLC keeps the focus the same: put in the work, tell the story, and invite the community along for the ride.
