The Cycle of Fashion
WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND! Did you know the fashion cycle has five stages? And you’re probably more familiar with them than you think! In SouthCarolina this cycle is especially noticeable.
The 5 stages of fashion are:
- Introduction: This is when a new style or trend is introduced to the public. It could be a new design, color, or pattern that catches the eye of fashion insiders.
- Increase: This is when the style gains momentum and becomes more popular. More people start to wear it, and it begins to appear in fashion shows, magazines, and advertisements.
- Peak: This is when the style reaches its peak of popularity. It's everywhere, from the runway to the streets, and everyone wants to wear it.
- Decline: This is when the style begins to lose favor. It's not as trendy as it used to be, and people start looking for something new.
- Obsolescence: This is when the style is no longer fashionable. It's gone, and people move on to the next big thing.
Trends like bright-colored Crocs or crop tops, they’re a topic of talk, and then before you know it, everyone from celebrities to your next-door neighbor is wearing it. But once these styles have reached the top, they eventually have to come back down. This is the decline. After that, the style is gone and no more, at least until it comes back again. Think of it like fashion recycling! And it's not just clothing that goes through this cycle. In South Carolina, fashionable hairstyles also come and go, from the slicked-back look of the 50s to the beachy waves of the 2010s.
Sounds strange to say that kids are getting mullets and 80’s style blow-outs like Farrah Fawcett, but it’s true! So, if your favorite trend is losing fashion favor, you just gotta be patient and wait another decade or two. In South Carolina, with its year-round sunshine and diverse communities, fashion is always changing, and there's always something new to try. Keep an eye out for the next big trend, but don't be afraid to rock the retro styles too!
