Stomp, Sip, Repeat!
The biggest mess you'll make all summer comes with bragging rights. The Grape Stomp Festival returns to Wadmalaw Island on Saturday, August 15, turning Deep Water Vineyard into one of the Lowcountry's most delightfully squishy traditions.
More Than Just Purple Feet
Now in its 22nd year, the annual Grape Stomp Festival has earned its place as an August favorite for wine lovers, families and anyone who's ever wondered what it feels like to crush grapes the old-fashioned way. The celebration marks the beginning of harvest season, mixing vineyard views with live music, local food and plenty of opportunities to jump right into the action.
The main event is, of course, the grape stomp competition. Teams of two can climb into a barrel, kick off their shoes and race to see who can stomp their way to victory. Not ready to compete? Open stomp barrels will be available throughout the day, making it easy to snap the classic grape-stomping photo without entering the contest.
Come Hungry, Leave Smiling
There's plenty happening between stomps, making it easy to spend the whole day at the vineyard:
- Sample wine tastings beginning at 10 a.m.
- Cool off with wine slushies, draft meads, mimosas, Bloody Marys, beer, and other refreshing drinks.
- Grab lunch from Fed Up!, Wally's Gyros, or Foxes Fried.
- Catch live performances from Dallas Baker and Friends and Southbound 17.
- Browse local vendors offering handmade gifts and unique finds.
- Challenge friends to lawn games while soaking up the vineyard atmosphere.
Admission starts with a car pass, priced at $10 in advance and $20 on the day of the festival, while grape stomp competition entry is $20 per two-person team. Pre-purchasing tickets is the easiest way to skip the last-minute scramble and head straight for the fun.
Running from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the festival offers a full day of laid-back Lowcountry charm with just the right amount of friendly competition. Whether you're determined to win the stomp, eager to sample the latest wines or simply looking for an excuse to spend a Saturday outdoors, this annual tradition has a way of leaving everyone with purple toes, great photos and stories worth retelling long after harvest season ends.
