Small But Mighty!
You’ve probably passed a dozen of them today—without thinking twice. A handmade sign, a name you don’t recognize, maybe someone loading supplies from their own trunk. Small businesses are everywhere in South Carolina. They keep neighborhoods interesting. They keep people working. And most days, they do it quietly.
Next week’s a good time to notice. National Small Business Week runs May 4 through 10, and it’s all about the folks who keep things moving at a local level.
How to Show Up for Small Biz Week
You don’t need a themed tote bag or a loyalty punch card to make a difference. Just look for ways to support what’s already around you. Some spots are organizing ways to make that easier:
- In Hilton Head and Bluffton, the Chamber is marking the week with lunch, learning, and a little AI. Events kick off May 5 with a member appreciation barbecue and continue through May 7 with workshops on artificial intelligence and business strategy.
- Scout Motors is leading a supplier event in Richland County on May 8 to connect local businesses with manufacturing opportunities! It's sold out now sadly, so look for future ops!
- In Beaufort, applications for the free Lowcountry Business Accelerator are open through May 8 for aspiring entrepreneurs. Yes, May 8, so get to it!
Or skip the schedule and keep it simple. Order lunch from somewhere nearby. Tag your favorite local shop on Instagram. Leave a kind review. It all really adds up—and makes people smile! Win win, right?
Homegrown and Hustling
South Carolina’s small businesses aren’t just surviving—they’re setting the pace. Between March 2022 and March 2023, more than 21,000 new small businesses opened their doors, and they helped add over 54,000 jobs across the state. That’s nearly 80% of all new jobs created during that stretch!
Some are growing fast. Others are staying intentionally small. But together, they’re keeping South Carolina’s economy moving—and proving that big things really do start small.
The Work-Life Juggle Is Real
Running a business means doing a little of everything. Emails, inventory, taxes, fixing the jammed receipt printer... It’s exciting! But until it’s exhausting.
More owners are finding ways to protect their time—whether that’s closing earlier, bringing in help, or leaning on support from SCORE mentors or SBA programs. A lighter workload doesn’t mean less ambition. It means keeping things sustainable!
What’s Next? Keep It Local!
Small Business Week ends May 10, but the best part? The people behind your favorite spots are still working the next day! Find more local gems at www.guidetosouthcarolina.com/business-consulting.
