Pedal Power on South Carolina’s Bike Trails!
You don’t have to summit a mountain or train like a Tour de France hopeful to enjoy a good bike ride. In South Carolina, you just need two wheels and a sense of curiosity! Whether you're dodging dappled light on a shaded greenway or coasting through salt-scented Lowcountry air, our Palmetto State has a trail for every kind of cyclist. And in South Carolina, we go from Sunday strollers to speedsters in spandex in the pedal of an eye.
With spring in full bloom and summer not far behind, it’s prime time to explore two of South Carolina’s most beloved bike routes: the Swamp Rabbit Trail in the Upstate and the Spanish Moss Trail in the Low Country. They’re scenic, accessible, and steeped in local charm. And offering more than just exercise, these trails are the real deal—they’re a full-sensory cycle through the heart of South Carolina!
From Rails to Trails—and Plenty in Between
Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail stretches 28 miles along a converted rail line, connecting the City of Travelers Rest to downtown’s tree-lined parks and food stops. You can pedal past the Greenville Zoo, cruise by Unity Park, and stop for tacos or a cold brew—all without dodging traffic.
- Need wheels? Reedy Rides, Pedego, and Greenville BCycle have you covered.
- Park it smart: Free lots are available near Cleveland Park and Unity Park, with plenty of garage options downtown.
- Want company? Local groups like Bike Walk Greenville, Greenville Spinners, and Upstate Shredders host regular rides for all ages and levels.
Down in Beaufort County, the Spanish Moss Trail lets you trade mountain views for marsh vistas. This 10-mile paved trail follows the old Magnolia Line railway, linking neighborhoods with nature—and offering breezy access to fishing spots, trailheads, and shaded pit stops! The Mather Trestle’s new fishing and viewing extensions are a must-see (or must-pause).
Wanna Ride? (and Break a Sweat!)
These trails are more than scenic shortcuts. They’re economic lifelines, community hubs, and love letters to sustainability. They support local businesses, connect neighborhoods, and make the outdoors feel just a little more neighborly. So, grab your helmet and hit the trail! Whether you're commuting, cruising, or just escaping screen time, South Carolina’s got a path with your name on it.
