Past Meets Playtime: SC’s Historical Gems

Past Meets Playtime: SC’s Historical Gems

If there’s one thing we love in South Carolina, it’s history. From the legendary battlegrounds of Fort Sumter to the cobblestone streets of Charleston, there’s plenty of rich history to explore—and summer is the perfect time to get started!

Whether you’re trying to keep the kids entertained or looking to do a little learning yourself, there’s something for you. Here’s your guide to free and budget-friendly sites and events that’ll give you a glimpse into the past this summer.

Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie

Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie are two of those places that remind you just how deep our roots run. Fort Sumter, sitting right in Charleston Harbor, is where the Civil War officially kicked off—something we all learned early on in school. Getting there means a ferry ride (which is half the fun, honestly), and the views of the city from the water never get old.

Just across the harbor on Sullivan’s Island, Fort Moultrie has its own legendary story — especially that Revolutionary War battle where palmetto logs helped us hold off the British. The fort grounds are free to wander, and it’s the perfect spot for a family afternoon with history, ocean breezes, and a picnic.

Mitchelville Freedom Park

Mitchelville Freedom Park on Hilton Head Island is one of those places you don’t hear about enough, but it’s definitely worth the trip. It’s where the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people was built during the Civil War — pretty incredible when you think about it. The park is quiet and open, with signs and displays that tell the story, plus some replica homes to give you a feel for what life was like back then. It’s totally free, easy to walk around, and a great way to spend an afternoon learning something new with the family.

The Charleston Museum

Need to beat the heat? Cool off in the Charleston Museum, where you don’t just learn about history—you get to be a part of it. You’ll find several permanent exhibits featuring artifacts from the Revolutionary War and Civil War, along with other rotating exhibits, guided tours, and historical houses to peruse.

Don’t forget the kids! Be sure to check out the Kidstory exhibit, which combines history with hands-on learning for an interactive experience your kids are sure to remember. Seriously, where else can they raise a pirate flag and illuminate a lighthouse? This museum requires a paid admission, but kids under 2 get in free, and regular child tickets start as low as $6.

 Historic Camden

Historic Camden is a cool spot to take a little trip back to Revolutionary War days without going too far. It’s one of the oldest towns inland here and used to be a big deal for the British during the war. Now, you can check out rebuilt buildings, a small museum, and lots of open space to run around. The kids usually love seeing the cannons and forts, and in the summer, they often have fun reenactments and events. It’s an easy, laid-back way to soak up some history and enjoy the outdoors.
