Keys. ID. Polling Place. Go!

Keys. ID. Polling Place. Go!

Election Day should not begin in the wrong parking lot. Before heading out on November 3, South Carolina voters can settle three useful questions: Am I registered, where do I vote, and what will be on my ballot?

The South Carolina State Election Commission’s 2026 election preparation page puts the date in plain view: Tuesday, November 3. Its advice for Election Day voters is equally direct. Check your polling place and bring your photo ID.

For the address, use MySCVotes. After entering your voter information, you can check your registration, find your assigned polling place and view your sample ballot. That last step is worth a few minutes. A ballot reflects where you live, so the version someone else posted online may not be yours.

Check the polling address before leaving home, even if you have a voter registration card tucked in your wallet. Polling locations can change, and a familiar drive is only helpful when it ends at the right door. If you have moved or changed your name, the Commission’s voter resources explain how to check and update your registration information.

Then find the ID you plan to bring. South Carolina requires a current, valid approved photo ID for in-person voting. A South Carolina driver’s license, a South Carolina DMV ID card, a South Carolina voter registration card with a photo, a federal military ID and a U.S. passport are among the accepted options. The State Election Commission website has the official voting information, including what to do if you forgot your photo ID or could not obtain one. Those situations have different procedures, so it is worth reading the guidance that applies to you rather than guessing in line.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Anyone already in line at 7 p.m. may vote. That gives voters a clear end time, whether the trip fits before work, over a break or after picking up the kids.

None of this requires studying a campaign ad or decoding a neighbor’s ballot. Check your own details, put your ID with your keys and confirm the address before you start the car. The best Election Day surprise is finding out there isn’t one.
