Off to the Races at the Carolina Cup!

Off to the Races at the Carolina Cup!

If you grew up in Camden, you know that spring doesn’t truly begin until the horses hit the track. For decades, Camden’s Springdale Training Center has been home to this legendary steeplechase, drawing 30,000+ fans ready to tailgate in style, cheer on top-tier thoroughbreds, and celebrate the season with friends old and new.

The Carolina Cup is where fast horses, bold fashion, and top-tier tailgating come together for the ultimate spring celebration. Maybe you're all about the races, maybe you're just here for the social scene—either way, it's the kind of day you circle on your calendar and count down to.

What to Expect on Race Day

Come Saturday, March 29, the hats will be big, the drinks will be cold, and the energy will be off the charts. Here’s how to do this full day of racing and revelry right:

  • Get There Early When gates open at 9:00 AM, the horses aren’t the only ones racing. You’ll be claiming tailgate spots, snagging the best shopping finds, and squeezing in all the fun before post time at 1:30 PM.

  • Tailgate in Style – Tailgating at the Carolina Cup has all the fun of a game day tailgate—just with charcuterie boards, champagne, and a little more linen than lawn chairs.

  • Dress to Impress – Bright sundresses, seersucker suits, and statement hats are all part of the fun. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself in the running for Best Dressed or Best Hat—style is just as competitive as the racing here!

  • Explore Vendor Village – Need a last-minute accessory? Vendor Village is packed with local goods, race-day fashion, and plenty of bubbly to keep the celebrations going.

Why Is Camden So Horse-Crazy?

Blame it on the Northern snowbirds who, back in the early 1900s, swapped blizzards for balmy winters and brought their thoroughbreds with them. By 1930, the Springdale Race Course was hosting the first Carolina Cup, cementing Camden as a steeplechasing hotspot. Decades later, Marion duPont Scott added the Colonial Cup, sealing its racing legacy. Today, you can dig into that history at the National Steeplechase Museum, right next to the track where legends still run.
