Gator Gauntlet 5K: Run if You Dare

Gator Gauntlet 5K: Run if You Dare

You’re jogging through the woods, heart pounding, sunscreen dripping into your eyes. You hear something behind you—footsteps? a splash? Possibly a guy in a full gator suit? Honestly, it doesn’t matter. You just keep running.

That’s the vibe at the Gator Gauntlet 5K, happening Saturday, April 26 at Huntington Beach State Park. It’s a timed race, sure—but it’s also full of beachy chaos, low-stakes competition, and people in outrageous costumes chasing each other through salt marshes for fun. Whether you’re racing for a PR or slow-walking with your dog in a feather boa, this is the kind of event where everyone fits in. Ready? Set? Gator!

The Course:

You’ll loop through some of the most scenic stretches of the Grand Strand. The route winds along shaded trails, skirts saltwater marshes, and dips into soft sand paths. It’s mostly flat, but not boring—think tree roots, low-hanging moss, and the occasional egret judging your pace. It'll be ideal for newbie runners and trail-curious joggers who are tired of laps around the high school track!

And let’s talk about the setting: Huntington Beach State Park is 2,500 acres of coastal beauty with a side of wildlife drama. You might pass a gator sunbathing near the lagoon, a heron mid-fish-snatch, or even Atalaya Castle peeking out in the distance. If you haven’t visited before, this is your “why didn’t I do this sooner” moment.

Not Just for Serious Runners

This isn’t one of those mega races where you get lost in a sea of neon shirts and bounce houses. It’s capped at 175 people, which means no elbow fights at the starting line and no pressure to run like you’re qualifying for the Olympics. Just show up, be ridiculous, and have fun.

And once you’re done racing a gator (or being one), you’ve got the whole park at your feet. Walk the causeway, hit the beach, or just collapse under a tree with your race medal and a snack. Either way, you earned it.
