Fresh Air, Full Buckets!
Summer has a funny way of convincing people they need to slow down. Maybe it's the longer days, maybe it's the heat, or maybe it's the simple joy of biting into fruit that actually tastes like it came from somewhere instead of a grocery store shelf.
Across South Carolina, pick-your-own season is in full swing, giving families an excuse to swap air conditioning for open fields and leave with baskets that smell like sunshine. Peaches, blueberries, fresh vegetables, homemade treats, beautiful gardens, and a little dirt on your shoes all come with the experience.
Fill the Basket, Then Fill the Trunk
If peaches are the goal, Black's Peaches in York has nearly a century of practice helping people find the perfect one. Family-owned since 1923, the farm opens its peach orchards for U-Pick throughout July, but the visit rarely ends there. The market is stocked with fresh produce, the bakery keeps tempting visitors with homemade treats, and seasonal events and field trips keep the property buzzing long after everyone has finished comparing who found the biggest peach.
Blueberry fans have plenty of options, too. Herb n Berries U-Pick Blueberry Farm in Montmorenci offers a slightly different experience. The USDA Certified Organic farm, certified through Clemson University, welcomes pickers into its blueberry fields with a one-pound minimum purchase for anyone entering the patch. Those who'd rather stroll than pick can still wander the flower and herb gardens at no charge, making it an easy outing even for friends or family members who aren't interested in carrying a bucket.
Down in the Lowcountry, Champney's Blueberry Farm in Meggett keeps things flexible. Visitors can gather their own blueberries or let the farm handle the picking instead. Sweet corn, watermelon, and wholesale purchasing options make it easy to leave with enough produce to keep the kitchen busy for days.
Meanwhile, Upstate in Gray Court families can spend an afternoon at Mixon Farm, where U-Pick blueberries share the spotlight with pre-picked berries, a farm market, local honey, flowers, and plenty of photo-worthy rows of berry bushes.
Before heading out, it's always smart to check each farm's latest picking conditions. Summer weather, ripening schedules, and enthusiastic berry hunters can change availability quickly.
Fresh produce season doesn't last forever. Fortunately, South Carolina has no shortage of farms ready to help everyone squeeze every sweet, juicy minute out of it.
