Columbia’s Shrimp & Grits Fest Is (Almost) Served

Picture this: It’s a steamy June evening in Columbia, and you're elbow-deep in a plate of shrimp and grits that just might change your definition of dinner. Somewhere nearby, a local band’s warming up, your fork’s already working overtime, and every sample you try swears it’s the best in town. It’s not just dinner—it’s a competition. And lucky for you, you’re the judge.

On Saturday, June 21, Columbia’s Shrimp & Grits Fest returns for its 10th anniversary, inviting hungry locals to taste their way through a dozen different versions of the state’s most iconic dish. From creamy to spicy, cheesy to smoky, each restaurant brings their A-game—and only one will walk away with the title of “Best Shrimp & Grits in Columbia!” (Well, two—if you count the People’s Choice winner, which you’ll help pick.)

The Grit of It All

To fully appreciate the stakes, you’ve got to respect the grits. South Carolina declared grits its official state food in 1976, and the dish’s roots run deep—part Indigenous tradition, part Southern staple, part blank canvas for culinary creativity.

This year’s lineup of competitors includes Tupelo HoneyRuby SunshineCluckinRight Food TruckSmiling ChefButterkreme QueenSignature CateringSeawell’s Catering, and more! Whether it’s a brick-and-mortar brunch favorite or a catering crew with serious skillet skills, each team is putting their twist on the classic combo. Think:

  • Pimento cheese grits with smoked shrimp
  • Bourbon-glazed bacon and scallion-studded bowls
  • Sweet-heat blends with local flair

And yes—every sample is unlimited, so bring your appetite and maybe a game plan!

No Grits, No Glory!

Tickets are $50 and include live music from The Get Down acoustic duo, plenty of parking, and access to door prizes worth sticking around for. There’s even a discount for kids under 18—though you might want to keep your favorite samples to yourself.

Grits might be humble, but this night is anything but. So come hungry, come curious, and come ready to argue over butter ratios. In Columbia, grits aren’t just food. They’re a full-blown celebration.
