Charleston’s Grandest Homes Are Open for Snooping

Charleston’s Grandest Homes Are Open for Snooping

Charleston’s historic homes have seen it all—grand parties, secret rendezvous, and more gossip than a beauty parlor on a Friday afternoon. Ever wondered what’s behind those towering iron gates and pastel facades? This spring, The Charleston Festival (March 13–April 13) swings open the doors to the city’s most exclusive homes and gardens. No peeking through the hedges required.

Charleston didn’t just happen to keep its old houses—it fought for them. While other cities bulldozed history for strip malls, locals bought up crumbling mansions, set up protective easements, and even moved entire buildings brick by brick. The result? One of the largest collections of historic architecture in the country. And for one glorious month, you get to step inside that history—preferably with a garden cocktail in hand.

What’s in Store?

  • Street & Garden Tours – Walk through private homes that have stood since before your great-great-grandma had a rocking chair.

  • Charleston by Design – Four days of architecture, interiors, and art, featuring Design in Mind lectures, Home & Design Tours, and the swanky Opening Night Party at the Aiken-Rhett House. (March 13–16)

  • Tours Through History – Explore Charleston’s famous ironwork, churches and steeples, and pink houses—comfy shoes encouraged!

  • History is More Fun with a Cocktail – Sip, sway, and socialize at the Opening Night Party (March 13) or Jazz at the Emeline (March 23)—because preservation pairs well with a good drink.

Where You’ll Step Back in Time

And the best part? Every ticket sold supports the Historic Charleston Foundation, guaranteeing these homes—and their stories—stick around for generations.
