Campus Cheers to 225 Years!
The University of South Carolina has a birthday big enough to require an entire academic year. Its 225th celebration will stretch across 2026-27 with exhibits, campus events, old photographs and plenty of Gamecock history.
USC was chartered in 1801 and welcomed its first students in early 1805, when classes began in Rutledge College on the Historic Horseshoe. Two-and-a-quarter centuries later, the university has grown into a statewide system with seven institutions, more than 380,000 alumni and an annual economic impact of $7.4 billion across South Carolina.
That is a sizable leap from one building and a handful of students.
A Birthday With a Long Guest List
The 225th anniversary celebration began with the fall semester and will be woven into familiar campus events throughout the academic year rather than confined to one oversized birthday party.
One of the first major dates arrives September 9, when President Michael Amiridis delivers his annual State of the University address at 10 a.m. on the Horseshoe. This year, the setting carries a little extra weight. The same historic core that witnessed USC’s earliest days will serve as the backdrop for a look at where the university is heading next.
USC has also created a 225th anniversary hub where Gamecocks can follow the celebration and revisit university stories, photographs and videos from across generations.
History Goes on Display
The anniversary happens to coincide closely with America’s 250th, giving university librarians plenty of history to work with. A new South Caroliniana Library exhibit will connect USC’s story with the nation’s semiquincentennial, while Thomas Cooper Library is hosting “Echoes of Independence” through December.
The exhibition explores South Carolina history, adding another layer to an anniversary year that looks well beyond campus traditions and football Saturdays. More information on current and upcoming displays can be found through University Libraries exhibitions.
For South Carolinians, 225 years offers an unusual chance to view USC in the long frame. Buildings have changed, the student body has grown and the university’s reach now stretches statewide, but the Horseshoe still sits at the center of the story.
Apparently, some campus traditions have excellent staying power.
