Neighbor to Neighbor: A Legacy of Service and Community Impact
Since its founding in 2008, Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) has been a driving force in improving mobility and access to essential services for older adults, adults with disabilities, and veterans. Rooted in the vision of fostering a community where every adult thrives with independence, N2N has grown into a recognized leader in transportation access and mobility management across Horry, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties in South Carolina, as well as Brunswick County, North Carolina.
N2N’s core mission is to bridge gaps in transportation and community access through free, volunteer-powered rides, pantry delivery services, and social connectivity programs. With 27% of Horry County's population aged 65 or older—and even higher concentrations in neighboring counties—N2N plays a critical role in addressing mobility challenges for a rapidly aging demographic. Many of these residents also face financial and health-related barriers, with internal data indicating that 78% of N2N clients live at or below 250% of the federal poverty level.
In fiscal year 2024, N2N provided 6,601 one-way trips to 389 individuals, including 4,618 rides for 320 urban clients. As the only free transportation service of its kind in Horry County, N2N’s volunteer-driven Rides Program averaged 350 rides per month in FY24, increasing to over 600 monthly rides in early FY25. However, demand continues to exceed capacity, with over 100 ride requests left unfulfilled each month, underscoring the ongoing need for expanded services.
Beyond transportation, N2N combats food insecurity by delivering pantry essentials to homebound residents. In FY24 alone, the organization completed 1,772 pantry deliveries to 87 urban clients, contributing to a total of 2,650 deliveries for 138 individuals. By collaborating with local food pantries and community organizations, N2N ensures that vulnerable populations have reliable access to nutritious food.
A cornerstone of N2N’s success is its commitment to mobility management best practices, ensuring staff members are certified to provide high-quality, client-centered support. The organization maintains strong partnerships with healthcare providers, public agencies, and nonprofit organizations, reinforcing its role as a scalable, community-driven solution. Over 90% of surveyed clients report feeling more connected to their communities due to N2N’s services, and volunteers consistently describe their experiences as deeply meaningful and impactful.
By improving access to transportation and essential resources, N2N directly contributes to enhanced health outcomes, reduced social isolation, and greater independence for those it serves. As demand for services continues to grow, N2N remains dedicated to expanding its reach and deepening its impact, ensuring that every adult in its service area has the opportunity to age with dignity and independence.
