About
Jean’s Angels has developed and implemented an outreach system that makes it a little
easier to provide necessities to those who do not have a place to always go home to.
Our methodology at Jean’s Angels is to identify, offer and become a “safety net” to those
who have been marginalized. To offer hope and a listening ear. At any given moment,
anyone can go through a traumatic experience that permanently changes his or her life.
When this happens, Jean’s Angels steps in to help. Over a million dollars in food, household
supplies, appliances, clothes, shoes, hygiene, and furniture items have been distributed
through 20 events.Over the past six years of operating, Jean's Angels have provided a
variety of mobile and other services to diverse populations in the Berkeley, Dorchester, and
Charleston County communities assisting individuals and families. On average, we help
over 1,500 people a month.
The mission, vision and goals at Jean’s Angels are to serve as a resource to vulnerable and
underserved groups in the Low Country. Received funding supports a core set of unique
services to vulnerable and underserved populations. Services are currently being provided in
the Lowcountry counties of Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, Berkeley, Charleston,
Dorchester, and Jasper with an eagerness to expand to all Lowcountry counties with
additional funding support.
We serve the unstably housed families barely meeting basic food, clothing, and shelter
needs. We serve senior citizens including medically fragile or physically limited
populations. We provide children & youth services to those with special needs (disabilities
or diagnosed with terminal illnesses) or underprivileged, traumatized teens, children in
poverty, children dealing with drug, gun violence, and domestic violence situations.
In 2023, our organization provided services to 25,600 individuals, including 11,200 children
throughout the Lowcountry counties. In addition to our weekly services, during spring break 2023, we were able to donate a week's worth of food for 65 of the 123 families that
needed our service.
Some of our many organizational activities include the following:
1 . Hygiene Outreach Services (2023): A Mobile Shower/Laundry Trailers was a vision in 2022 and became a reality (placed
into service) in 2023. Mobile Shower/Laundry Trailers are taken each week where the
homeless can shower and get a haircut. Laundry services are provided and handled by the
organization’s staff. The Outreach Services trailer is towed by a truck. We have a generator
and fuel for onsite power sufficient to power all equipment as part of the setup at a location
as needed. In addition, we provide a meal or a snack, personal care, and hygiene products. Each person
can choose a new outfit to take with them.
2 . Youth and School Support Services to Homeless Children and After school tutoring:
Youth services and school supplies: We currently serve 610 school-age homeless
children in the Lowcountry area with backpacks filled with school supplies and ongoing
weekly tutoring, personal care/hygiene items, food, and snacks. Often, we are on the front line with school nurses who ask for assistance for children needing clothing and shoes,
making it possible for them to attend school. We are also becoming more aware of special
needs children and currently provide weighted blankets for those in need.
3 . Toy Give Away Services (since 2020):
Jean’s Angels has distributed toys to underprivileged children. Despite COVID, generous
donors helped to make this possible. In 2022, our organization provided 5,000 toys to local children. Almost 20,000 dollars in toys were distributed to children in the Lowcountry last
year (toy distribution increased yearly – from 1,000 toys in 2020 to 3,000 in 2021 to 5,000
in 2022 to 10,000 in 2023!)
4 . Angel Support (our own make a wish initiative):
Jean’s Angels work with children/teens experiencing catastrophic life changes, providing
everything from adult mentors to trips to Disney. We select children who have experienced gun violence, domestic violence, children experiencing substance use disorders, and
terminal illnesses. We also serve children whose parent(s) have been diagnosed with a
terminal illness.
5 . Support Autism spectrum children:
In 2023, we provided 85 weighted blankets to children with special medical needs for
comfort. 6 . Educational scholarship:
Annually, the Bobby Jean Smith Scholarship Fund awards $500 to an individual entering
a “social servant” vocation; the Rufus Smith Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a
high school senior athlete from Baptist Hill High School who has a GPA of 3.0 or higher
and enrolled in a 2 - 4 year academic or vocational program.
7 . Senior Citizens and needs-based support services: Outreach Events supporting group homes, senior citizens in low-income housing and nursing home facilities, housing medically fragile populations, poverty-level families, and
low-income new moms (medically fragile or vulnerable populations clients such as
individuals on dialysis and limited mobility/chronic pain have been served. Based upon the needs of this population). In 2023, 52 Lazy boy recliners were provided to persons in this Group.
