Founded in 1871 the Columbia Chess Club is South Carolina’s premier destination for chess players of all ages and skill levels. The Club hosts weekly tournaments, scholastic events, and community outreach programs, fostering a vibrant chess culture in the heart of the state. In 2023, the Club opened its own dedicated chess facility—becoming one of the few clubs in the country with a brick-and-mortar home.

With a focus on accessibility, sportsmanship, and player development, the Columbia Chess Club has directed hundreds of rated events and helped grow statewide participation. It is the home of the largest open chess tournament in South Carolina history and the launching pad for rising stars, local legends, and lifelong learners alike.
