About

The mission of AfterBirth is to promote and sustain the health and well-being of children and their families by providing quality, affordable, comprehensive primary care pediatric and early postpartum services. AfterBirth is committed to fostering health equity - caring for, educating, and empowering families to become self-advocates who can make informed decisions for optimal health. AfterBirth’s model of care is non traditional. Dual certification in pediatrics and midwifery is another unique feature of my practice. This has allowed for in-home newborn visits to also encompass postpartum check-ins with mothers; physical, mental, and lactation assessments are conducted. A worsening maternal mortality crisis is facing the United States. AfterBirth is providing an intervention that is helping to identify and mitigate these risks in the upstate counties of South Carolina.

By utilizing a Direct Primary Care structure, we are not bound by the demands and limitations of the health insurance industry.  In addition to available brick and mortar office space, home visits increase our accessibility.

In addition to providing clinical care, AfterBirth is heavily involved in community outreach and collaboration. Through this avenue, we continue to educate the public on the role and scope of the nurse practitioner, and the importance of preventive primary care. We attend and speak at events providing health and psychosocial education and resources for residents including community baby showers and back-to-school giveaways. We teach postpartum supportive care approaches to in-training community health doulas.  Our collaboration with community organizations is of utmost importance to us as it serves as a bridge between health care and social welfare. We have established relationships with multiple local  entities including churches, schools, HeadStart, food pantry, and a community based doula organization. We also participate in state taskforces, local health department and hospital-based community focus groups addressing the challenging health disparities and possible solutions.
